About

Yum Poison began back in 2004 when I, Mary Crotty, sat in German II class paying very close attention* to our lesson of translating a few paragraphs of German in our textbooks to English. We read about Hans Riegal Bons, who created the company Haribo that sells gummy candies. In this excerpt, it mentioned that the company does not make blue gummy bears because the color can not be created using natural flavors– you can use artificial, which is why other companies do have this color– and it is considered poisonous in nature. Poison is a bit frowned upon in the edible field, so it was avoided.

My fourteen year old brain immediately decided such a character should exist and proceeded to sketch a little gummy bear named The Blue Poisonous Gummibear who wanted to take over the world and had the catchphrase, “Eat me, I’m DEADLY.”** The spelling of “gummibear” comes from the German spelling, Gummibär and I have never bothered to update it partially because I like it being one word.

Thirteen years and over 200 comics written, here we are. Now, I have updated my comics so those 200 will not all be making an appearance as they have not aged entirely well, but the overall plot and some of the random favorites will. I’m very excited to bring Blue and the gang to you and I hope you enjoy it!

Follow the comics on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter,  if you’d like!

*This might be a bit of an exaggeration in case Frau Dus (my former German teacher) is reading… I swear I was a good student.

**This was funny to me then.
